Congrats, July Volunteer of the Month Julie N.!

Pencils down & eyes on the board…because July’s Volunteer of the month is none other than the engaging educator herself, Ms. Nelson!

Julie’s summer break has been spent as an intern, supporting our fast-paced foster program. In addition to that, she has used her teaching talents to help organize existing programs and create new processes to help the shelter pets. Ms. Nelson even takes on homework (in the form of foster kittens)! From singing silly songs to putting in serious service hours, no task it too below Julie - she is a delight to be around and downright pleasure to work with.

If we had to grade this ‘teach’ she would certainly get an A+! ::class dismissed::

Pool Safety Tips for Dogs

July 11th is National Swimming Pool Safety Day!

As the weather warms up, its time to cool off in the swimming pool. Backyard pools provide lots of family fun and entertainment. However, they also come with their share of hazards for our pets.

Checkout these tips for your dogs while hanging around the pool!

  • Teach your Dog to Swim - In addition to teaching your dog to swim, make sure they know how to get out of the pool. If you need to, enlist the help of a dog trainer. They can handle your dog's fear of water and teach him/her swimming basics.
  • Buy a Dog Life Vest - Life vests are great for dogs that will never be great swimmers. Vests provide extra safety so that your dog can stay afloat and remain highly visible. Even with a life vest, NEVER leave your dog unattended.
  • Learn Dog CPR - Being able to properly administer artificial respiration and CPR on a dog is vital in any emergency.
  • Fence Your Pool - A pool fence/enclosure is a great option if you have a dog that spends most of his/her time in the backyard. There are fencing options that keep your pool looking spectacular and your pets safe.
  • Have Fresh Water Available for your Dog - Do not let your dog drink the pool water and have fresh water available to keep your dog hydrated. After your dog is done swimming, rinse him/her off with fresh water. This removes chlorine and other chemicals that can be harmful.

OC Animal Care to Host the Family Fur-st Pet Food Pantry

TUSTIN, Calif. (June 3, 2020) – OC Animal Care will be kicking off the Family Fur-st Drive Thru Pet Pantry to support Orange County families in need of pet food. The Family Fur-st Pet Food Pantry events will take place on the second Saturday of every month while food is available, and the need is still present in the community. In collaboration with the Animal Assistance League of Orange County, SoCal Animal Rescue Team, and The Shamrock Rescue Foundation, the first event will take place on Saturday, June 13, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the OC Animal Care facility located at 1630 Victory Road in Tustin. “This event will provide a helping hand to families with pets who are experiencing financial strain during these challenging times,” said Chairwoman Michelle Steel, Second District Supervisor. Pet owners will get a bag of food for their dog, cat, or rabbit while supplies last. “The financial burden suffered by many people because of COVID-19 has made it very difficult for people to feed and provide for their pets,” said Vice Chairman Andrew Do, First District Supervisor. “The goal of the drive-thru pantry is to support Orange County residents and make it easier for them to hopefully keep their pets and not give them up for financial reasons.” The event will follow public health recommendations and allow attendees to remain in their vehicle while volunteers load the food. Families are asked to leave their pets at home to make this event run as efficiently as possible.
