An Open Letter from Director Mike Kaviani

An open letter to our community, August will mark my one-year anniversary as the Director of OC Animal Care. As is often the case for anyone approaching an important annual milestone in their life, the upcoming arrival of this one-year mark evokes a variety of thoughts and actions. Anniversaries can be a time for reflection, a time to be reminded of what drove you to make the original commitment, a time to celebrate the wins, and a time to look forward to the future and what may be needed to make the next year even more successful. Anniversaries are about coming together to honor a shared commitment, and to bolstering that commitment for years to come. As August draws near, I’ve been thinking a lot about this, and I’d like to let you all in on these thoughts. What drove me to OC Animal Care? When I applied for the Director position, I had a vision. A vision of leading the staff and the community to implement programs that benefit pets and people. A vision of supporting staff to create a shelter that can successfully achieve quality of life, lifesaving, and public safety and refuses to accept that these are mutually exclusive concepts. A vision of OCAC becoming a shelter where every pet gets a fair chance of a live outcome. A vision that would ultimately result in OCAC becoming a regional and national model for high-volume municipal animal sheltering. During the interview process I learned that I was not alone in this vision. read more

OC Animal Care 2019 Mid-Year Report

THE NUMBERS ARE IN!We are excited to share our progress so far for 2019. Check out our Mid-Year Report linked below. Thank you to our community for your ongoing support!Visit our Stats Page for more information on how data included is calculated.

4th of July Pet Safety!

As the 4th of July rapidly approaches, OC Animal Care would like to remind our community pet owners about some safety tips to keep in mind during this holiday. Loud noises from fireworks and other celebrations can cause our pets to become very frightened and lose control. It is important to pay extra attention to the safety and comfort of their pets before, during and after any 4th of July celebrations. In the event your pet does manage to escape, check your animal care center and the shelters in the surrounding areas. Remember your pet was frightened and may have fled beyond its normal, familiar territory. July 5th is the busiest day of the year at animal shelters nationwide and we want to ensure that your furry friends do not become a statistic. Share this information to help pets in your area! read more

302 Pet Tags Made for Pet Tag Awareness Month!

Pet Tag Awareness Month at OC Animal Care was a huge success! During our month-long promotion throughout June, we encouraged community members to make sure their pets are properly tagged with up-to-date information. In 2016, only 9% of the 17,389 animals impounded at OC Animal Care had some form of proper identification (i.e. Pet License, Microchip, Name Tag). Every Saturday in June we offered Free Pet Tags to help identify local pets -- for the entire duration of the event we made 302 pet tags! (That’s over 78 more than last year’s total of 215!) Thank you to our wonderful staff and volunteers for making sure that these pets have proper ID! Remember: Proper identification can be your pet’s ticket home!

72 Animals Adopted During Movie Magic Pet Fair 2019!

OC Animal Care’s Movie Magic Pet Fair 2019 was a star-studded success! 72 of our shelter animals found their fur-ever homes (43 cats, 22 dogs, 4 exotics, and 3 rabbits) on Saturday June 29th! Our new location featured booths hosting local animal rescues and pet vendors in our community. We had wonderful pet demonstrations by Courteous Canines and Teens4Training, featuring positive reinforcement training. The OC Zoo brought in beautiful, exotic animals and taught audiences about wildlife. Adoptable dogs were showcased in the kennels’ “VIP room”, creatively decorated by kennel staff, and we had a cavalcade of kittens in a community room. Kona Shaved Ice, Drizzle Funnel Cakes, and Piaggio on Wheels provided food and tasty treats throughout the day! Many thanks to the staff and volunteers that helped make this event a success, as well as everyone within our community that stopped by and chose to adopt a shelter pet! We could not have done it without you! Special thank you to 3rd District Supervisor, Donald Wagner, for sponsoring the animal spay/neuters!

Officer Holladay Voted Employee of the Year!

Animal Control Officer Holladay has been voted Employee of the Year by his peers! ACO Holladay has been working with OC Animal Care since December 2015, and he currently holds Bachelor degrees in Criminal Justice and Political Science from Cal State Fullerton. Before ACO Holladay started working at the shelter, he wasn’t too fond of cats… and now he LOVES them! He is a tremendous asset to our team and we are very proud and lucky to have him. Way to go Officer Holladay!
