With Halloween right around the corner, here's a few tips for keeping your pets happy and safe!

• If handing out candy to trick or treaters, be sure your pet is secure in a crate or another room.  Pets can easily escape through frequently opened doors. 
• Be sure pets are wearing collars with ID tags.  Constant doorbell ringing, frequent visitors, and disruption in their normal routine can spook even the most well-adjusted pet. 
• If your dog is easily stressed, consider walking your dog earlier in the evening to avoid crowded sidewalks and costumed kids. 
• Jack O’ Lanterns are festive, but beware of candles.  A darting cat or dog can accidentally tip them over and create a fire hazard!  Consider switching to battery operated tea lights this year.
• Costumes can be fun, just make sure it is not restrictive or overly stressful to your pet.  Costumes should be loose enough around the neck and ribcage so as not to restrict breathing.  Be careful of anything that dangles which could cause a choking hazard.
• Keep candy out of your pet’s reach.  Candy and chocolate can be harmful to pets causing major health concerns and candy wrappers can easily cause a choking hazard. 

Our partners at the Noble Friends Foundation for OC Animal Care have covered the cost for the first 100 vaccines given at this event!

 This rabies awareness event is held each September in observance of World Rabies Day (September 28 of each year).  The observance day is Luis Pasteur’s birthday - Pasteur was the first to create an effective rabies vaccine.  This important event brings into focus the fact that, while we are fortunate to reside in Orange County, there are still humans and pets being exposed to rabies.  Rabies continues to kill tens of thousands each year worldwide. Please join us in helping to stop the spread by getting your pet vaccinated! 

This Low-Cost Clinic advises customers if their animal is ill, they need to take it to their own veterinarian for exam.

OC Animal Care's Family Fur-st Drive-Thru Pet Food Pantry was held on Saturday,  July 10th - what a success! 

So far we have distributed over 72,500 pounds of food to help feed 6,000+ pets in our community!

OC Animal Care is continuing to host The Family Fur-st Drive Thru Pet Pantry the second Saturday of each month to provide important resources to pet owners in the community. 

The next Family Fur-st Drive Thru Pet Pantry will take place this coming Saturday, December 11th from 8 - 10 a.m.

All pet owners in the community in need of pet food are welcome! If you are interested in helping to make this event possible, please visit the Pet Pantry Amazon Wish list to donate directly.

The Fourth of July weekend is traditionally the highest intake time for animal shelters across the country. In preparation for the upcoming holiday, OC Animal Care presents residents with the following tips to ensure a safe and happy celebration for pets and their owners. 

Provide a Safe Space for Your Pet Indoors 

Fireworks are loud and sometimes frightening for pets which can lead to panic and possible fleeing. To ensure pets are comfortable at home, pet owners can create a safe space by: 

• Keeping doors, windows, and curtains closed  

• Designating a quiet room or crate for their pet 

• Placing a sign on the door to prevent people from entering the pet’s room 

• Playing calm music or “white noise” such as the television in the background to distract their pet from loud noises 

• Giving their pet their favorite chew toy to keep them busy, such as a Kong stuffed with treats 

Ensure Pet Identification Is Up to Date 

Securing your pet with their collar and ID tag attached can make a difference if your animal escapes. Verify your pet’s name, phone number, and any important information such as medical conditions to ensure they are updated and current. Microchip your pet as an additional security measure in case your pet loses its collar and ID tag. 

Tips if You Lose or Find a Pet 

If you find a lost pet or your own goes missing, the following are actions you can take: 

• Contact OC Animal Care at (714) 935-6848 to make a lost or found pet report 

• Ask neighbors if they recognize the found pet or ask if they have seen your missing pet 

• Post lost/found flyers in your neighborhood or on local lost/found pages on Facebook, Nextdoor, Pawboost, and other social platforms 

• Contact your local vet office to see if your missing pet was brought in or take a found pet to a local vet office for a microchip scan
