We would like to give a huge shout out and big thank you to some very special partners outside of our community who helped pull over 150 cats/kittens from OC Animal Care. Our kitties made the trip to Riverside County Department of Animal Services and with assistance from ASPCA and Wings of Rescue some went on a recent flight transport to the Bay area to ARF, Berkeley Humane and Marin Humane! These kitties hopped on a jet plane to find their loving fur-ever homes for the holidays up north! Last week we also worked with Lionel's Legacy and Second Chance Dog Rescue to who pulled 24 dogs, and today the Kris Kelley Foundation rescued 14 of our slider turtles! We are so grateful to have amazing partnerships with these organizations who have helped so many of our pets!
It's almost time for Thanksgiving! Don't forget about your four-legged family members while you celebrate with your two-legged ones! Here's a few Thanksgiving safety tips to keep your pets healthy and happy during the holiday. FOOD: Many Thanksgiving feast staples are toxic to pets. Turkey skin, onions, raisins, grapes, chocolate, artificial sweetener (xylitol), yeast dough, and particularly fatty foods are toxic to dogs and cats, and can cause potentially fatal health conditions. Keep furry friends away from the table! PARTIES AND GUESTS: If you know your pet gets anxious or over-excited around guests, consider keeping them in a separate room with food, water, and their favorite toy for the duration of the party. Even if your pet is comfortable with guests, make sure you watch the exits as doors open and close. Your furry friend might try to bolt while the front door is open as you greet your guests! Please be sure all of your microchip and licensing information is up-to-date!TRAVEL: If your holiday plans involve traveling elsewhere for multiple days, make sure you'v e made proper accommodations for your pet. Consider boarding them at a pet hotel/boarding house, or hiring a trusted friend to feed and spend time with your pet everyday while you're gone. read more

Meet our October Volunteer of the Month, Steve! Steve has been a volunteer since April 2019, and he’s already a huge asset to our team. When he’s not helping customers at the greeter desk, he’s either helping us organize donations or attending offsite events for the shelter. He’s always very welcoming to everyone he meets, and he goes above and beyond to help those in need. We are so grateful to have Steve as a member of the OC Animal Care Volunteer crew! Congrats again to our Volunteer of the Month, Steve!
If you’ve been waiting for the right time to open your home, now is the time. We currently have over 530 cats onsite who need homes. This year we have already taken in over 8,500 cats – that’s almost 1,500 more cats and kittens than at this point in 2018! – and that number goes up every.single.day. In the last week alone, we brought in 143 cats who needed our help. Now we’re asking you for help. Starting today 11/8 through Sunday 11/10 we are waiving cat adoption fees ($14 microchip fee still applies). Please tell your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and anyone else who might be looking for a new family member. With your support we can continue to help the cats in our community find the homes they’ve been dreaming of.

OC Animal Care partnered with OC Public Libraries to help adorable kittens find loving homes. These “OC Tails and Tales” kitten adoption events encouraged the public to come to the library to adopt, read to the kittens and learn more about OC Animal Care. Irvine Heritage Library, Cypress Library and Tustin Library were among the venues that hosted these kitten adoptions, and it was a huge success! Over the span of 3 events, a total of 38 kittens were adopted into loving homes! Event goers also had the opportunity to learn more about the shelter’s foster program that saves hundreds of kittens each year! The shelter is grateful to have the opportunity to co-host these events and provide an additional resource for kittens who are waiting to be adopted. OC Animal Care is excited to partner with OC Public Libraries for additional events in the future to help more feline friends find loving homes!

On September 21st, OC Animal Care hosted it’s Fall for a Friend adoption event sponsored by District 4 Supervisor, Doug Chaffee. Event goers had the opportunity to come down to the shelter and adopt an animal for free, not including licensing or microchip. Adopters waiting in line for the shelter to open their doors were welcomed with delicious donuts and a meet and greet with the District 4 Supervisor who said words of gratitude and appreciation to guests waiting to find their new furry friend! The event was a huge success and 128 animals (84 cats, 36 dogs, 5 exotics, 3 rabbits) found loving homes. Attendees visited booths hosted by staff from District 4 Supervisor Chaffee’s office and District 3 Supervisor Wagner’s office. The OC District Attorney’s office, OC Sheriff’s Department, OC Mosquito and Vector Control and Teens 4 Training were among the other vendors in present. OC Animal Care volunteers also hosted a bake sale table, free pet tag and spinning wheel booth. Guests also had the opportunity to cool down with a sweet treat from the Kona Ice Truck of Central Tustin. Thank you to everyone who adopted and made this special Fall for a Friend event one to remember!
