On Sunday, December 9, OC Animal Care attended Irvine Animal Care Center’s Home for the Holidays event! A total of four dogs and four kittens attended the special event. All four kittens and three dogs were adopted into loving families! The last dog waiting for a home, Pia the Chihuahua, was given a change of scenery and able to stay at Irvine Animal Care Center. The shelter is so grateful to be in a partnership with such a wonderful shelter. This year, Home for the Holidays was an event to remember! Thank you to all who came out to say hello and adopt a shelter pet!
Congratulations Rosalind!Rosalind is always ready to jump in and lend a hand! She has been a dog walker and greeter and recently she joined our F.A.C.T. TEAM to help clean and dip our ringworm kitty population. We love her smiles and enthusiasm! You ROCK!
Have you been to OC Animal Care lately? If so, you may have noticed a strange smell during your visit. This smell, often described as ‘rotten eggs’ is a result of the treatment currently being used on some of our shelter cats for Ringworm. Pee-yew! Okay, okay, so we're sorry about this temporary smelliness, but we want you all to know what's going on because to us, this is the smell of lifesaving PROGRESS! So here's the deal. Ringworm is not actually a worm but a common fungus very similar to Athletes Foot and staff and volunteers are working hard to treat all cats affected. It's a stinky job, but someone has to do it, and these poor cats (that have nooooo idea there is anything "wrong" with them) will soon be someone's cherished pet. Despite the fact that Ringworm is a treatable and non-life threatening condition, many shelters across the country still euthanize cats that test positive. Here at OC Animal Care, we are committed to saving lives and giving these cats the chance they deserve to find their forever homes. We thank our community for the support and understanding during these smelly times. To learn more about Ringworm or how to help, please see our FAQ linked below. read more

On Tuesday, November 20th, we were fortunate enough to host Lionel’s Legacy, a rescue program dedicated to providing senior animals with foster homes in the San Diego area. As a participant of the Oldies But Goodies Challenge for Adopt a Senior Pet Month, Lionel’s Legacy came to OC Animal Care with the intention of raising awareness for their cause, and personally connecting our oldest residents with the perfect foster home for them. Thanks to their efforts and generosity of volunteer fosterers, 16 senior dogs from our shelter are now being fostered in loving homes, where they can get all the attention and care they could ever need! We are so grateful to Lionel’s Legacy for their dedication to helping senior dogs! OC Animal Care still has senior pets waiting for homes this holiday season, though. Help brighten a senior pet’s holiday season and consider opening your home to a new furry friend. It's almost time for Thanksgiving! Don't forget about your four-legged family members while you celebrate with your two-legged ones! Here's a few Thanksgiving safety tips to keep your pets healthy and happy during the holiday. FOOD: Many Thanksgiving feast staples are toxic to pets. Turkey and turkey skin, onions, raisins, grapes, chocolate, artificial sweetener (xylitol), yeast dough, and particularly fatty foods are toxic to dogs and cats, and can cause potentially fatal health conditions. Keep furry friends away from the table! PARTIES AND GUESTS: If you know your pet gets anxious or over-excited around guests, consider keeping them in a separate room with food, water, and their favorite toy for the duration of the party. Even if your pet is comfortable with guests, make sure you watch the exits as doors open and close. Your furry friend might try to bolt while the front door is open as you greet your guests! TRAVEL: If your holiday plans involve traveling elsewhere for multiple days, make sure you'v e made proper accommodations for your pet. Consider boarding them at a pet hotel/boarding house, or hiring a trusted friend to feed and spend time with your pet everyday while you're gone. read more
