PRESS RELEASE: OC Animal Care will Waive Fees to Encourage Adoptions

Free pet adoptions flyer

Due to an abundance of dogs, cats and other animals, OC Animal Care will begin waiving fees for pets adopted by residents across Orange County. The waiver includes all regular adoption fees with the exception of a $27 charge for rabies licensing and will begin on June 29. The waiver will remain in effect until the capacity at the shelter drops below 60 percent. The Orange County Board of Supervisors approved the Fee Waiver Resolution in 2016, which calls to forego regular adoption costs when shelter capacity reaches above 80 percent. The resolution also applies when the shelter is expecting to see a sharp increase in numbers such as that during the Fourth of July holiday. OC Animal Care has been dealing with a busy kitten season and has seen an increase in overall intake numbers since moving into its new facility in Tustin. Numbers have hovered around an 80 percent capacity and have now reached 93 percent. The shelter has recently been promoting adoptions to help lower the numbers by offering free cat adoptions through the "Cool Cats of Summer" promotion and free pitbull or pitbull mix adoptions through the "Pit Pit Hooray" promotion. OC Animal Care is also encouraging animal lovers to temporarily foster a shelter pet to help ease the load during the Fourth of July holiday. The days surrounding this holiday have historically been the busiest days for OC Animal Care, with intake numbers more than doubling due to escaped and lost, frightened pets. To protect pets who may get lost, OC Animal Care is offering free pet tags every Saturday in June, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1630 Victory Road, Tustin 92782. "It’s important that pet owners know that a tag or microchip can be their pet’s ticket home" said OC Animal Care Interim Director Cymantha Atkinson.

PanLeuk - How Can You Help?

Red cross/ plus sign

As we work to prevent further exposure, cat adoptions will continue at the shelter. All potential adopters will be counseled in the potential exposure to the virus as well as the signs to watch for. As with standard adoptions, we encourage our adopters to return within the first seven days if they have any medical concerns about their animals. For cats, during this period, that window will be extended to 14 days.

Our focus is containment of exposure and diligence in best practices to rid the shelter of this virus as quickly as possible.

As always, we appreciate the commitment and support of our community. Our team is working diligently on behalf of these and all animals in our care.

OC Animal Care Attends Truck Adventures!

On Saturday, June 16, OC Animal Care attended the 2018 Truck Adventures at the OC Fair Grounds and the event was a huge success! We would like to give a special thank you to the hard work and dedication from our awesome Animal Control Officer team! Sergeant Alexandra Su and Animal Control Officers Edwin Espino, Adrianna Franco and Jessica Suggett had a great time meeting families in the community and showing them how OC Animal Care helps animals in need. Kids had a blast checking out the trucks, wrangling snakes, catching alligators and fishing for ducks! OC Animal Care loves reaching out and being a resource for the community that they serve. Attending events such as the Truck Adventures helps staff reach out and connect with the public. If you are interested in having OC Animal Care come out to a community event, please call (714)796-6426.

Bae Gives Back Helps OC Animal Care’s Shelter Pets!

Here at OC Animal Care, we are fortunate enough to receive so many great donations from the public and our partners. Bae Gives Back works to not only supply the public and their pets with dog supplies, but they also make a donation to our shelter with each purchase as well! Bae Gives Back thought of this wonderful idea after adopting one of our Shih Tzu’s, Teddy, from our previous location in Orange. They noticed Teddy looked chilly in his kennel and though he, and all of the other dogs, would benefit from having nice, warm blankets, so Bae Gives Back was born! Thanks to programs like Bae Gives Back, OC Animal Care is provided with fabulous donations that the staff and animals are incredibly thankful for.

Amazon Treasure Truck Donates to our Shelter Pets!

Most people look forward to Friday because the weekend, but in OC Animal Care’s case, it was the excitement of the Amazon Treasure Truck coming by! Although the Amazon Treasure Truck usually sells featured products, this special stop was to make a donation. Amazon partnered with the Purina Company and they had 1,500 cans of wet cat food, 250 cans of wet dog food, and 100 bags of treats, all of which they delivered to OC Animal Care. This donation is extremely appreciated by our staff and of course, the animals! Thank you to the Amazon Treasure Truck for recognizing the work being done at OC Animal Shelter and for a great way to start Friday! If you haven’t already, please check out the shelter’s Amazon wish list at http://a.co/b7s2NTt.

Officer Natalizio Helps Baby Hawk!

On Friday May 25, some residents reported a sick or injured baby owl on a path in the neighborhood. The path was filled with trees and adult birds hiding among them. The reporting party was advised it was most likely a healthy fledgling and to leave it be, however, an officer would be sent out to double check. Officer Natalizio reported to the location and once finding the bird, found it to be a baby raptor, possibly a hawk, not a baby owl.To be 100% sure if it was healthy and able to be left alone, Officer Natalizio took it to a doctor for further examination. The baby raptor was determined to be healthy and was returned to the wild near where it was found off the ground in a box. Thank you Officer Natalizio for your thoroughness and to the residents as well! We are thankful for our team and people in the community who care for animals as much as we do!
