Orange County has a temperately warm Mediterranean climate where the heat is typically cooled by the nearby Pacific Ocean. We experience warm weather for the majority of the year with occasional cold snaps during the winter months.
In summer, it is not uncommon for Orange County to experience heat advisories with temperatures rising well into the 90’s or triple digits. With so many activities and recreational venues available to us in Orange County, summer is a time for both you and your pet to enjoy the sunshine and outdoors. Unfortunately, this climate can sometimes lead to dangerous situations, such as leaving a pet unattended in a vehicle, walking your dog on hot pavement that can burn sensitive paw pads, and lack of access to water can endanger your pet’s health.
Some pets like to let their ears flap in the wind by going on a car ride, but please don’t ever leave your pets alone in a car, even with the windows cracked. Not only is it dangerous, it is illegal in California.

Penal Code 597.7 says no animal may be left unattended in a vehicle under conditions that “endanger the health or well-being of an animal due to heat, cold, lack of adequate ventilation, lack of food or water, or other circumstances that could reasonably be expected to cause suffering, disability, or death to the animal.” Animal owners or custodians who leave an animal unattended under dangerous conditions could face fines, jail time or both.
On occasion, Orange County can experience extremely cold weather. Some pet owners may also travel with their pets to locations where there is snow or ice. It’s important to remember that pets require additional care, like providing warm bedding and access to shelter, which can help ensure they stay warm and cozy when it’s cold outside.
