Slider - "Leapt into my son’s arms"
Animal Care Success Stories

My son and I took quite a long time trying to find the perfect dog. We looked for a year before we finally found Lucky Girl. She was a sweet and very timid Chihuahua mix at Orange County Animal Care Shelter. Unfortunately, Lucky Girl decided that no one would be allowed near us. We had to take her back on Easter Sunday. My son’s heart was broken and he cried the entire way to OCACS. I sent him to look at the dogs while I took care of Lucky Girls paperwork and made sure that she was given an opportunity to try and find another home.photo - Slider the dog

When I went and looked for my son to leave, he was sitting in front of a cage with yet another Chihuahua. I tried to explain to him that maybe we should try another breed of dog. While I was trying to get my son to understand that we needed to take more time to find that “Perfect Dog”, this mangy, matted grey mutt cautiously approached the cage door next to the one my son was looking into. He put one paw up on the door and moaned so softly that it broke my heart.

I brought my son’s attention to the poor scruffy beast next door and my son pointed at the “Not Available” sign. As I was telling him that if the dog was there the following weekend, we could spend sometime with him, and an employee came and changed the sign to “AVAILABLE”. We immediately asked to spend time with him.

We brought Slider home 4 days later. Smelling to high heavens and more tangles than we knew what to do with. One of his favorite things to do is chase things down our tiled hallway and slide to a stop, hence the name, “Slider.”

We take him to Costa Mesa Bark Park almost every night and the three of us have made several great new friends. Slider is known as the Personal Trainer of the Bark Park because he picks out one dog and gets them to chase him until they drop. Almost everyone loves to see Slider because they know that their little one is going to get the exercise they need.

The best part of all, I have never seen my son so happy or laugh so hard. As you can see, they are buddies, except when they are fighting over who gets what part of the bed.
