For as far back as I can remember, all my life I have
prayed to have my very own dog, and thanks to Orange
County Animal Care Shelter my prayers have been
answered. After searching through rescue organizations
without luck, my uncle suggested that we take some
time to visit your shelter.
My mother and I live in a condominium and I wanted a dog
that I could hold in my arms and cuddle with, so we
decided on limiting our search to smaller breeds. We
also decided it would be best to bring an adult dog into
our home, because he'd likely be housebroken and beyond
the mischievous puppy years. My uncle suggested a
poodle because they are so smart that they practically
train themselves.
It was a hotter than hot August day, and we looked
throughout the shelter, but couldn't seem to make a
decision, besides where to go to retrieve a cold drink,
and were ready to give in to the heat and seek out the
shade of home. Just then we spotted Louis: a fun,
sweet, powder puff ball of fur, just three years old.
It was love at first sight, between the two of us, and
we adopted him on the spot.
Once home, he was a going concern, excitedly exploring
every corner of our home, showering us in doggie kisses,
and impressing us by learning to sit on command within
10 minutes. He is working on lay-down now, and picked
that up nearly as quickly! Oh, it is so good to come
home from school to his happy and friendly little face;
even if my day was a tough one and I don't feel quite so
lovable, Louis shows me otherwise, loving me no matter
how I feel, or look, or act. If only people could learn
that trick. I think that he might be teaching me more
than I am teaching him, which is why I think every kid
should be given the opportunity to have a dog. I'm
awfully glad that my mother gave me that chance, and I'm
awfully glad that Orange County Animal Care Shelter gave
me Louis! Thank you so very much for the gift of love.
