Darla - "she has been the best dog ever"
Animal Care Success Stories

In April of 2006 my husband and I were moving and we had just adopted a dog named Petie. Petie was terrified of our cat Bonkers so we decided to go and find him a companion that could keep him company. I visited shelters after shelters but couldn't find a dog that I had a connection to. After about a month I was startingDarla the dog to give up until I happen to walk past a little white pit bull puppy. In the past I was always afraid to adopt a pit bull because of the negative media that surrounds that breed. However there was something about her that just made me melt.

I asked the shelter employees about her and they said she was still on stray wait. I was disappointed because every puppy I've come across at shelters already has a full waiting list for adopting. So I left feeling sad that I actually found a dog that I wanted badly and I couldn't have her. I came back about a week later and to my surprise she was there and her card said available! I was shocked so I went and got her information and found out that all the people on the list never came to get her.

After playing with her for five minutes I knew I had to have her. I adopted her and had to wait for the longest week of my life to take her home. When I did finally bring her home she was so happy to play with my other dog. I named her Darla after the little rascals since my other dogs name was Petie. After about a week I started to notice that she wasn't responding to me like you would think a puppy would. She wouldn't look at my when I whistled or called for her. I thought she was ignoring me at first but then I realized that she couldn't hear me at all! She was deaf.

It's been almost a year now and she has been the best dog ever! She knows hand signals and is always watching me to see if I will give her a command. I take her to the dog beach all the time in the summer and she loves to just sit next to me. I've never seen a more loyal dog that stands by me 24/7. She's the best dog and I wouldn't give her up for the world. I'm so glad I found her.
