Brutus — “Out Pal”
Animal Care Success Stories
It was Christmas
2006, and I knew all I wanted was a dog, to save a life. Our
"family" had grown to include a rabbit, cat, bird, two lizards,
and even a tarantula. We knew the right dog would complete our
family. But it had to be the RIGHT dog, not just any old
shelter dog. We were hesitant to go to the shelter because we
knew once there, we would feel obligated to take one home and we
could not take the risk of it being the wrong dog.
We went to many
shelters, went on the web, but still the right dog eluded us.
My thoughts were to wait until after the holidays, but my better
half had other ideas. When I got home from work a few days
before Christmas I was met with a surprise. The funniest
looking dog I have ever seen (part lab, part Corgi and part who
knows how many other breeds) ran over as fast as his stumpy legs
would let him and had the biggest smile I've ever seen on a
dog. When I asked what made him choose this guy he said because
he had "kindness in his eyes," not to mention he had been at the
shelter for three months already.
Brutus has
turned out to be the smartest, most well behaved dog I have ever
had (and I've grown up with purebred dogs my whole life). He
did try to chase the cat at first but with the proper training
they are now the best of friends. We found he knew basic
commands and could even roll over! He just wants to please and
be loved. He is our "pal" and our "buddy" and we love this dog
with all our hearts. He is a member of our family and I will
never hesitate to go to the shelter for a dog again. Brutus
just needed some patience and some TLC to become our best friend
and an important member of our now complete family.
