As the 4th of July rapidly approaches, OC Animal Care would like to remind our community pet owners about some safety tips to keep in mind during this holiday. Loud noises from fireworks and other celebrations can cause our pets to become very frightened and lose control. It is important to pay extra attention to the safety and comfort of their pets before, during and after any 4th of July celebrations.
A few precautions a pet owner can take to ensure that the celebration will be a happy one for both pet and owner are as follows:
▪ If your pet is typically kept outside, consider bringing them indoors or in the garage ▪ Provide a comfortable place for your pet, such as a room with the blinds or curtains closed, the lights turned off, and a place for the animal to hide ▪ Consider staying with your pet to reassure them during the fireworks show ▪ Board your pet at a veterinary or boarding facility ▪ Hire a pet sitter to stay with your pet ▪ If your pet is extremely sensitive to loud noises, your veterinarian may prescribe a mild sedative ▪ Make sure your pet has a collar with your current contact information and a microchip in case they run away
In the event your pet does manage to escape, check your animal care center and the shelters in the surrounding areas. Remember your pet was frightened and may have fled beyond its normal, familiar territory.
July 5th is the busiest day of the year at animal shelters nationwide and we want to ensure that your furry friends do not become a statistic. OC Animal Care wishes you all a fun and safe 4th of July!
